It was a long half hour before Mrs. Appleton stepped out. She wore a bright yellow summer dress and matching heels. She carried a long-handled basket in one hand, a beach towel in the other. John's breath caught as he watched her step forward onto the patio and glide across to a sun-lounger. No matter how often he caught sight of her, his heart swelled as if seeing her for the first time.

From talking to her son, Mason, he'd learned she had been a teenage model until she met Mason’s father and quit the catwalk within a year. His father was already a wealthy man, eight years older than her and keen to have children. Mrs. Appleton had reluctantly given up her fledgling modelling career. She assured her children that their birth had gone a long way to quieting her troubled mind over her career and she felt truly blessed, enjoying motherhood even more than she could ever have imagined. Besides, Mr. Appleton led a very public life full of dinner functions and other fancy get-togethers where she got the chance to wear many of her fashionable outfits she might have graced the catwalk in. She had a great life with a lot to be thankful for.

Still, John couldn’t help wondering on many occasions whether she was happy now. With the kids all grown up and gone to college, she spent a great deal of the day on her own in the house. Friends came and went often, but damn, that was a big house to spend so much alone time in. John recalled a scrap of a conversation he’d overheard a while ago. Mr and Mrs. Appleton had been in the garden, locked in a heated discussion about how many hours he spent working and wasn’t it about time he eased up and enjoyed some more quality time at home with her? And Mr. Appleton, she once mentioned casually to him, seemed to be working just as hard, or at least, away from home just as many hours as he had been a decade ago.

Not that John was complaining. With few distractions she spent much more time in her huge landscaped garden. A multitude of colorful flowers grew amongst expertly planted flower-beds. He loved to watch her walking along the winding paths between those flower-beds, humming to herself as she planted, tended and watered the plants, enjoying the many scents that drifted to her. Even from his perch over forty feet away, tucked high in the shadows of his secret viewing nest, John could smell the garden below and fancied he could even catch her own sweet scent. He imagined almost daily what he’d say if he ever plucked up the courage to go over there, how they’d chat and hold hands as they explored the garden together, sharing jokes and stories, hugs and kisses...

John snapped out of his daydream when he heard Mrs. Appleton set a tall glass of fruit juice down on a glass-top table, put her basket close by and shake out the towel across one of the sun-loungers.
